Cosmo just turned two years old this month. He came into my life when I was knee deep in my first novel, Dracula Unmasked. I had been at it for over a year and still only halfway finished, but I was determined to be published. I hadn’t realized how lonely writing a novel could be, until I took it up full time in 2017. My characters kept me company, of course. Any writer will tell you their characters speak to them on a regular basis, sometimes at the most inconvenient times. The loneliness I should have anticipated; after all, writing by nature is a very solitary profession. I got through that first year, even though, the winter was very difficult; and continued working on my book with only music for company.
In 2018, we decided to get a dog and connected with a family who had puppies due in April. Two weeks before the puppies were to be born, the mother became ill and both she and the litter died. We had already bought dog toys, a bed and other supplies and now there would be no puppy. Luckily, we were able to connect with a breeder in Lancaster and found this beautiful dog. From the beginning, I have been convinced it was meant to be.
My husband and I fell in love with Cosmo immediately, and our lives have never been the same. Having the companionship of a dog has changed everything for me, too. He is always there like a faithful and loyal friend, even on days I haven’t bothered with makeup because I'm immersed in a pivotal chapter. Cosmo can't read, or understand anything I utter as I brainstorm story lines or pound the keyboard; but his presence makes all the difference. I think what I love best is the way Cosmo looks at me when I finish a really good chapter and turn to smile at him; his tail wags even though he has no idea why I'm happy. My happiness makes him happy too. For a dog it’s as simple as that. How can you ask for anything more than that?
